3 Yr LLB Evening Course Details

What is the Evening LLB Degree?

Many universities noted that the LLB degree was becoming an increasingly popular option for many corporate professionals in the midst of their career. Many professionals also felt the need to change their field or upgrade their skills in the Legal area. Further, even more professionals decide to take VRS or early retirement from their current professions and enter the field of Law, either as practitioners, teachers or advisers.

For all these groups of individuals, gaining an LLB degree by attending classes in the evening was seen to be a very attractive option. It allows people to continue working at their day jobs, and study alongside. In other cases, it may also be necessary due to family commitments. In any case, many universities perceived a strong demand for LLB classes conducted in the evening, after office hours. Thus, they started offering the same LLB degree as an evening class variant. This was a good move, and immediately saw strong demand from students.

What is the Eligibility for 3 Year LLB via Evening Class mode?

In order to be eligible for the 3 years Evening LLB Course from any of the University or Law Colleges whose LLB programs are approved by the Bar Council of India [BCI], candidate must have completed the Bachelors or/and Master’s Degree from a recognized University with a minimum of 45% aggregate marks in any discipline. As per the norms set by the Bar Council of India, the maximum age limit to apply for the 3 years LLB program for the general candidates is 30 years whereas it has given the right to the University to give concession of 5 more year for the applicant belonging to SC or ST or any other Backward Category. Admission is either through entrance examination or merit of marks obtained in the qualifying examination, whatever be the admission criteria of the Institution of the concern.
The reason why people prefer evening or weekend classes are due to job commitment. Some students have already started working but decide to pursue higher studies without leaving their jobs. So for such students, having the availability of an evening LLB class is a boon.

The Bar Council of India discourages part-time/evening LLB courses. At present, this evening LLB degree is not considered for practicing as a lawyer in any court of law. The BCI has prohibited those have obtained an LLB degree through the evening course from the practicing as a lawyer. Degree certificates issued by the University of Kerala on the successful completion of the LLB evening course examinations will bear an appropriate entry to this effect. However, the certificate will be considered for promotions or higher suitable postings for service personal.

However there are certain institutes that are trying to retain the evening law classes. The High Court of Kerala has directed the Secretary, Higher Education department, Government of Kerala to take a decision on resuming the evening LLB course, at Government Law College, Ernakulum. The three year evening LLB course was discontinued in the year 2002 all across the state. However the Government re introduced three year LLB evening course at Government Law College, Thiruvananthapuram during 2014-15 academic year.

Pros and Cons of LLB Via Evening Class

There are however some pros and Cons of having evening classes:

  • Evening classes work out for people with tight schedules. They can be helpful for people who don’t do their best thinking in the morning or who have jobs and other things to do during the day. Student athletes can usually benefit from evening classes because their usually after scheduled practice times.
  • Residents of the campus probably benefit more than commuters because they can go straight to their dorm after class.
  • It is very advantageous for people who have to work during the day

  • BCI discourages part time or evening classes. So a student attending evening class cannot practice law in court like students passing out of regular law universities
  • A disadvantage is that a student is drained by the end of the day. So there is lesser information that a student can take in.
