The Himachal Judicial Services examination is conducted annually, and occurs in 3 stages:
- Preliminary Exam (objective type)
- Main Exam (subjective type)
- Personality Test / Viva Voce (interview)

Preliminary Examination
The Preliminary Examination will be objective type and consist of 3 parts as below:
All 3 papers will be held on the same day. The syllabus for the Preliminary Exam will be the same as that for Paper I to Paper III of the Main Exam.
Main Examination
The Main Examination will be subjective type and consist of 5 parts as below:

- Chapter-XVII (section 138 to 143) of the Negotiable Instruments Act
- HP Excise Act – 2011 as applicable to the State of HP
- Wildlife Protection Act
- Indian Forest Act
English Composition
- A choice from 3 essays on general subjects (150 marks)
- Translation of Hindi passage into English (50 marks)
- The standard of the English paper would be that of the graduation examination of Himachal Pradesh University
Language
- A choice from 3 essays in Hindi on general subjects (50 marks)
- Translation of English passage into Hindi (30 marks)
- Composition (Idioms, corrections etc.) (20 marks)
- The standard of the Language paper would be that of the Matriculation examination of the Himachal Pradesh Board of School Education
Interview / Viva-voce Details
The Viva Voce is for candidates who qualify in the Main written examination. The viva voce carries 100 marks. Marks obtained would be added to the score in Main examination to assess overall selection of candidates.
