CLAT Overall Analysis

Overview

  • Candidates were allowed to attempt the online CLAT in a limited time of 120 minutes, i.e., two hours.
  • The online CLAT paper had as many as 200 questions. The questions were of objective nature with multiple-choice options. Candidates had to choose the correct one among the given options.
  • Each correct answer in CLAT 2017 paper will be awarded 1 mark and 0.25 marks each will be deducted for every incorrect response from the total scored marks. Non-attempted questions will be awarded with zero marks as no marks will be deducted for this.
  • The question paper will be asked in English language only.
  • The information regarding the different sections and the marks they are carrying is as follows: Mathematics-20, English-40, Legal Aptitude-50, Logical Reasoning-40, Gk and Current Affairs-50.
CLAT Overall Analysis

English

  • The English section of CLAT tests the candidate’s proficiency in English based on comprehension passages, grammar and vocabulary.
  • Candidates are questioned on their understanding of the passage and its central theme, meanings of words used in the passage, etc. The grammar section has questions on sentence correction, sentence rearrangement, filling the blanks with appropriate words, etc.
  • Since past few years it can be seen that Reading comprehension and Fill in the blanks are the areas carrying maximum weightage.

GK and Current Affairs

  • The General knowledge section of CLAT consists of 50 questions from Static GK and Current Affairs.
  • The importance of this section lies in the fact that it helps conserve time. You can use this to your advantage by allocating more time to other sections of the examination.
  • It also helps to boost the overall score as all the questions are factual and direct.
  • CLAT GK section has more emphasis on Current Affairs and General Studies.

Legal Aptitude

  • The Legal Aptitude section of CLAT will test your legal “reasoning”, not legal “knowledge”.
  • Legal Reasoning is the most significant component of the legal aptitude section, in terms of marks allotted.
  • The other component is Legal Knowledge, which consists of questions based on legal facts and current events related to the field of law.
  • Legal Reasoning questions focus on legal propositions, where a set of facts are given along with a principle of law. The given principle has to be applied to the facts.  The section aims at judging a student’s legal aptitude, research aptitude and problem solving ability.
  • Wherever a technical/legal term is used in the question, the term is explained in the text of the legal principle itself.
  • The Legal Aptitude Section consists of 50 questions in total. This section’s significance lies in the fact that it is the tie-breaker section.

Logical Reasoning

  • Among all the 5 sections of CLAT, this section is considered relatively difficult.
  • However, it can be easily mastered with dedicated practice. Also the number of questions, you encounter from this section in CLAT is high; therefore, you cannot afford to ignore this section.
  • If your concepts are clear, this section can help you boost your overall CLAT score.

Mathematics

  • A quick analysis of CLAT tells us that the level of maths is basic to say the least, and requires familiarity with numbers, rather than knowledge of advanced calculus.
  • Even though the weightage of this section is least in CLAT, aspirants must devote their CLAT preparation time to this section as well.
  • The candidates banking their career on this exam cannot afford to ignore CLAT Mathematics section.
  • The questions are elementary in nature and with little preparation they might be able to solve 15-18 questions easily with good accuracy. Hence, boosting your overall score.
