RJS Syllabus 2025

The RJS (Rajasthan Judicial Service) exam tests both legal knowledge and written expression. Since the inclusion of language papers into final merit, aspirants must balance bare-act mastery with strong essay-writing skills in Hindi and English. A focused syllabus-first approach saves months of wasted effort.

Overview — Exam Stages & Pattern

Prelims (Objective)

  • Paper: Law & Language (MCQ)
  • Marks: 100
  • Duration: 2 hours
  • Weight: Law 70% / Language 30%
  • Negative marking: 1/3rd for wrong answers

Mains (Descriptive)

  • Paper I — Law (Civil): 100 marks, 3 hours
  • Paper II — Law (Criminal): 100 marks, 3 hours
  • Paper III — Hindi Essay: 50 marks, 2 hours
  • Paper IV — English Essay: 50 marks, 2 hours
  • Interview / Viva-Voce: 35 marks (added to Mains)

Core Bare Acts & High-Priority Laws (Mains Focus)

Prioritise these statutes — they form the backbone of both Prelims and Mains papers:

  • Constitution of India — fundamental rights, writs, basic structure.
  • Code of Civil Procedure, 1908 (CPC) — suits, jurisdiction, execution.
  • Code of Criminal Procedure, 1973 (CrPC) — investigation, trial, bail, charges.
  • Indian Penal Code, 1860 (IPC) — general principles and commonly tested sections.
  • Indian Evidence Act, 1872 — admission, relevancy, primary/secondary evidence.
  • Transfer of Property Act, 1882 — sale, lease, mortgage, easements.
  • Indian Contract Act, 1872 — formation, breach, remedies (Section 73 relevance).
  • Specific Relief Act, 1963 — specific performance and compensation principles.
  • Rajasthan Rent Control Act, 2001 — state-specific law to cover for RJS.
  • POCSO, Domestic Violence, Juvenile Justice Acts — important for criminal paper.

Pro tip: CrPC & Evidence historically contribute the most Prelims MCQs — devote extra practice time here for quick gains.

Paper-Wise Preparation Strategy

Law Paper I — Civil

  • Read CPC and landmark CPC judgments (procedure & remedies).
  • Master Transfer of Property and Contract Act basics plus key sections of Specific Relief.
  • Practice drafting short précis and issue-based answers.

Law Paper II — Criminal

  • Focus on CrPC procedure, Evidence Act provisions and key IPC sections.
  • Memorise charge framing rules (Section 211 CrPC) and major precedents (e.g., DK Basu guidelines).
  • Regularly practice factual application questions.

Language Papers (Hindi & English)

  • Essay structure: Introduction → Legal/Policy context → Arguments (pro/con) → Conclusion.
  • Practice 40+ high-scoring essays and summaries; time yourself.
  • Use current affairs judiciously to strengthen essays with examples and citations.

How to Use This Syllabus — Practical Tips

  1. Syllabus-First Planning: Print the syllabus and tick topics as you finish them.
  2. Bare Act Indexing: Maintain an indexed file of sections + one-line summary + case citations.
  3. Mind Maps & Flowcharts: Use for procedural subjects (CPC/CrPC timelines, evidence stages).
  4. Weekly Mock Tests: Simulate Prelims MCQs under timed conditions; review mistakes in depth.
  5. Answer Writing Practice: For Mains, practice 3–4 full answers a day with peer or mentor feedback.

Model Question (Mains) — Framework

Question: “What constitutes a ‘charge’ under the CrPC? Explain the basic rules regarding the form and content of a charge with relevant legal provisions.”

Suggested framework:

  • Define “charge” (Section 2(b) CrPC) and its purpose.
  • Explain requirements under Section 211 (language, particulars).
  • Discuss case law on specificity of charge and amendment of charge.
  • Conclude with importance for fair trial and safeguards for accused.

Common Misconceptions

  • “Minor acts can be ignored” — Wrong. Minor acts often yield direct, low-effort marks.
  • “Language papers are just formalities” — Wrong. They are scoring and included in final merit.
  • “Vacancies are yearly” — Wrong. RJS vacancies are irregular; consistent preparation is necessary.
