📘 TOPIC: Preparation for RJS, DJS, PCS(J) and other Judicial Service exams

The Indian Penal Code forms the bedrock of criminal law. Its thorough knowledge is a must for all aspirants of RJS, DJS, PCS(J) or any other Judicial Service exam for that matter. Q 1: Every person has a right to defend ___ against any offence:

Solution:
Section 97 says every person has a right to defend his own body and body of any other person against any offence affecting human body.
This any other person may be a relative, a friend, an acquaintance or a complete stranger. Simply put, any other person means any other person whatsoever.

✅ Thus, option (b) is the correct option.

Q 2: Under Section 57 IPC, in calculating fractions of terms of punishment, ‘imprisonment for life’ shall be reckoned as equivalent to imprisonment for:

  • a) twelve years
  • b) twenty years
  • c) imprisonment till death
  • d) thirty years

Solution:
It is clearly stated in sec 57 that ‘imprisonment for life’ shall be reckoned as equivalent to imprisonment for twenty years.

Q 3: Outraging the modesty of a woman is punishable under:

Solution:
Section 354 says, whoever assaults or uses criminal force to a woman intending to outrage her modesty or knowing that he is likely to outrage her modesty shall be punished with imprisonment: min 1 year, max 5 years and fine.

Solution:
Defamation is a criminal offence as defined in section 500 IPC. It is also a civil wrong and the wronged person can claim compensation by way of a civil suit. Thus, it is both a crime and a tort.

Q 6: A (a 28 year old man) and B (a 27 year old woman) were in a romantic relationship…

Solution:
The relevant portion of section 415 IPC says, whoever, by deceiving any person, intentionally induces the person deceived to do a thing which he would not do if not deceived which act causes harm to that person in body, mind, reputation or property is said to “cheat”.

Solution:

Solution:
